In this lesson you:
■ add task durations to the project, using
the Task list
■ add a new task to the project
■ see the results of your changes in the
PERT chart

the Work breakdown lesson. The Tutorial saved
that project in the PERT chart window.
When you get the project, it appears in
the window it was saved in -- the PERT chart.

In this lesson you indicate how long each task
will take so HPM can begin calculating dates
and determine the project's length.
Also, the VP of Sales wants to take a look at
the plans for the booth. She needs to approve
them before construction gets under way, so you
need to add a task for approval.

To get a project, select ~Get/Save/Remove~2.

This is the Project list window. You start here
to get a project you've saved. Normally, you use
the Up and Down Arrow keys to move the cursor to
the project you want. Then you press Enter and
HPM gets the project and displays the window
where it was last saved.

But there's another way, too. You use that method
now. Start by pulling down the Files menu.

You now want to display the Task list. Start by
pulling down the Data menu.

select it.

The Task list window overlays the PERT chart. At
this window you can add more tasks, change the
order of tasks, or include more information about
the tasks listed.

Right now, you can't see all the columns in this
window. (Look for the arrow and the word ~More~2 in
the upper right corner of the screen.) Later you
move the cursor to see the other columns.

The Task list shows the name of each task in the
first column. The second column shows the type of
task. An ~M~2 in this column means the task is a
special kind of task known as a ~milestone~2.

A milestone is like a checkpoint that marks the
start or end of a series of tasks, or an important
point in the project such as the approval of plans.
It has no duration, so the ~Planned duration~2 column
for all milestones is blank.

For tasks, the ~Planned duration~2 column shows
the default of zero. The ~Earliest start~2 column
shows the same date as the planned start for the
project until you add task durations.

You entered the planned duration of Plan and
Build when you created them. Now you can enter
durations for the others. First find ~Recruit~2.

Before adding a duration for ~Train~2, take a look
at the ~Earliest start~2 column.

After you add a task duration, HPM calculates the
earliest start dates for as many tasks as it can.

If your project is large, calculations take time.
But HPM can suspend automatic calculations.

pull down the ~Compute~2 menu.

columns come into view. But HPM always displays
the first two columns, ~Name~2 and ~Type~2.

You are responsible for seeing that the plan is
approved.

When you add a task at the Task list, HPM displays
this fill-in so you can tell it where to place it.

HPM supplies task names for the ~Add after~2 and
~Add before~2 fields.

In this case, HPM's "guess" is ~after~2 Staff End
and ~before~2 a branch. You want to place it just
before End. Move to the Add before field.

Now you see by the name column pointer that that
branch was right before ~End~2. Just confirm it.

Because you've made all the changes necessary,
you can now ask HPM to calculate dates. Use
the speed key for calculating.

HPM takes a moment to calculate the project
dates and display them in the ~Earliest start~2
column. And the ~Needs Calc~2 reminder disappears.

Now take a look at how these changes appear when
converted to a PERT chart.
